English 1B ONLINE

Course Code: 18636

Welcome to
Spring 2006 English 1B Online.   This course meets fully online.  Once the course officially begins, the links to the left will guide you around the "nuts and bolts" of the course.

Eligibility for English 1B is determined by one or more of the following:

Completion of English 1A with a grade of C or better
Counselor recommendation

I will add as space allows, but will only consider those who have completed the prerequisite.

Once you have officially added the course, the Sierra College Distance Learning department will enroll you in Blackboard.  Students who have enrolled prior to the start of classes will be enrolled in Blackboard before classes start.  Students who add the class the first week will be enrolled in Blackboard within 48 hours of adding the class; however, students added the first week will begin participating in the course via this website immediately.   I expect you to attend (whether online or face to face) the Sierra College Distance Learning Online Class Orientation.

Students interested in taking an online course should be able to browse the internet with confidence, be familiar with sending and receiving email, and have convenient access to a computer that is connected to the internet.

There are several internet tutorials available online.  I have provided links to some at left.

TEXTS:   The required texts for the course are:

Required:
Meyer, Michael. The Compact Bedford Introduction to Literature.
7th Edition
ISBN:  0-312-43445-6

Chopin, Kate.  The Awakening--Mid semester--not at bookstore.  I will give you more information on the syllabus.

 Internet readings and exercises.

The Bedford text is available at the Sierra College bookstore.

They're also usually available online at  Amazon.com and other online bookstores.  Try addall.com (you'll need the ISBN number, which I have provided) for great deals, but be sure you get the correct edition.  You will need the text immediately.

Instructor info:

My name is Jeanne Guerin, and I will be your instructor for the course.  I have been teaching college composition courses for 6 years.  Before I began teaching, I became interested in computer mediated instruction; thus I focused on that area as I completed my Master's degree, teaching web-assisted courses as part of my graduate studies, and serving formal and informal internships in web assisted and online courses, taught by my mentor, Amanda Corcoran, one of American River College's online teaching "pioneers."

In addition to my duties as an instructor at Sierra College, I teach composition at American River College and CSUS, and am also a staff member of the Sierra College Writing Center.

On a personal note, besides my life long love of reading, I enjoy digging in my garden, gourmet cooking (for many years I worked as a chef and caterer), attending the opera, listening to the blues, watching  baseball and basketball--I love the Oakland A's and, of course, the Kings--and spending time hanging out with family and friends.
